I became a lawyer because the skills developed in law training have many applications and I wanted to have flexibility in developing my career. I also believed that understanding and being able to work with our legal system would allow me to accomplish whatever objectives I might set.

Before law school I was fascinated with international studies, political science, and foreign cultures. I focused also in my undergraduate studies on regional organizations and international, intergovernmental organizations. My law studies evolved to concentrate on international and comparative law, culminating in an LL.M. from Brussels, Belgium. My work as in-house counsel in international operations of major US corporations provided a strong grounding in commercial law, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, technology licensing and corporation law. It also took me to many countries and I enjoyed increasing my knowledge about the differences in legal systems and laws of other countries. During those years I became an expert on US and international trade law as an advisor to the US Department of Commerce and the Office of the US Trade Representative. My move to Taiwan in 1999, where I opened my own law office and learned Mandarin Chinese, was a continuation of my fascination with other cultures and languages.

While there, my law practice grew to include non-profit organizations because of my interest in promoting sustainable development in that country. Exposure to the culture of Taiwan during the almost 12 years I lived there led to greater cross cultural sensitivity and through my language and meditation studies and practice honed my ability to focus and really hear my clients. I endeavor to keep my clients' overall situation in mind and advise in a manner designed to accomplish their long term objectives. In addition to connections with lawyers around the world through my work and membership in bar associations, I've been very active in movements and associations which are improving and enhancing the law training and the practice of law and which are harmonious with Alternative Dispute Resolution. Please see the section Healing and the Law on this site for more information. I became a mediator in 2001, and that practice also was harmonious with the studies I was engaged in at that time which included studies in psychology. After that I added arbitration and enjoy offering that service as well.

Please see the section on this site on Alternative Dispute Resolution for more information on those specialties. Recently I have been training mediators and arbitrators on cross-cultural communication, as noted in the Conferences and Publications section of this site. I look forward to hearing from you and to assisting you in the areas of my expertise.
